Tired of a difficult life, NPA rebel in Quezon surrenders

CAVINTI, Laguna – Tired of a difficult life in the mountains, a New People’s Army (NPA) rebel has surrendered to authorities in General Nakar, Quezon.

The surrenderer yielded a Bushmaster M16 rifle and six short magazines with 122 bullets. He is a member of Kilusang Larangan-Narciso, Sub-Regional Military Area-4A.

He told the General Nakar Municipal Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (ELCAC) that he surrendered because can no longer endure the hardships and realized the futility of the armed struggle which sacrificed his and his comrades’ lives for a useless cause.

He said he was enticed to return to the fold of the law by the various programs implemented by the government, particularly those intended to alleviate the lives of former rebels, and integrating them back to mainstream society.

Furthermore, he noted that his former colleagues who surrendered now have a better life.

Brig. Gen. Cerilo Balaoro Jr., commander of the 202nd (Unifier) Brigade, welcomed the surrender of the communist guerilla and thanked him for deciding to return to the fold of the law with full hopes for a brighter and peaceful future.

“His decision to surrender is also a clear manifestation that the government’s sustained information dissemination and public awareness campaign is well and effectively disseminated in the far-flung areas," Balaoro said.

The Philippine Army and Philippine National Police facilitated his surrender in Sitio Pangatloan, Barangay Pagsangahan.
