Police arrest 11 for illegal gambling in Cebu


CEBU CITY – Police arrested 11 persons for allegedly engaging in illegal gambling through a basketball shooting competition on Tuesday, Sept. 6, in Barangay Aliwanay, Balamban, Cebu.

Lt. Col. Glenn Hife, chief of the Balamban Police Station, said they have received incessant reports that illegal gambling activities done via a basketball shooting competition were rampant in the area.

Last Tuesday, a concerned citizen tipped off the police that a group of men gathered once again for another basketball shooting competition.

The participants would place a bet with the contestant making a basket getting the purse.

The shooting competition was ongoing when police arrived.

Arrested were Michael Alquizar, 40; Rociller Labrador, 43; Randolph Cumad, 37; Johnny Boy Mambaje, 25; Rejimar Aresgado, 23; Jeffrey Lesmes, 44; Philip Nacion, 35; Rolito Estareja, 44; Restituto Flores, 57; Aman Encueta, 35; and Agustin Pahamtang, 33.

Cash amounting to P290 believed to be the bet money was seized during the operation, police said.

Charges for violation of Presidential Decree 1602 will be filed against the 11 arrested persons, police said.
