DOH reports 1,467 leptospirosis cases from January to Aug. 20

The Department of Health (DOH) reported on Monday, Sept. 5, a total of 1,467 cases of leptospirosis in the country from January 1 to Aug. 20.

According to DOH, the cases this year were 15 percent higher compared to the reported cases during the same period in 2021 at 1,278.

It added that cumulatively, most leptospirosis cases were reported from the National Capital Region (NCR) with 279 at 19 percent; Region II with 174 at 12 percent, and Region VI with 174 at 12 percent.

In the recent period, from July 24 to August 20, DOH said that it recorded 106 cases, The same regions had the highest number of cases, except for Region VI. It was NCR with 36 at 34 percent; Region II with 12 at 11 percent and Region XI with 10 at nine percent.

"Regions V, VII, VIII, and XI breached the alert and epidemic threshold within the past four morbidity weeks (July 24 to August 20, 2022). However, no clustering was noted nationwide," DOH said,

Nationally, there were 205 deaths reported with a case fatality rate of 14 percent. These deaths were reported in January with 14; February with 11; March with 23; April with 32; May with 29; June with 29; July with 53; and August with 14.
