DOH records over 1,400 cases of leptospirosis since January

The Department of Health (DOH) has already recorded more than 1,400 leptospirosis cases this year.

Latest data from the DOH showed a 17 percent rise in leptospirosis cases this year compared to the same period in 2021.

There were 1,462 leptospirosis cases recorded from Jan. 1 to Aug. 13, the DOH said. During the same period last year, a total of 1,249 cases were logged.

Most of the leptospirosis cases were recorded in Metro Manila with 274 cases.

It was followed by Cagayan Valley and Western Visayas that both recorded 174 leptospirosis cases, Central Visayas with 118 cases, Davao Region with 115 cases, and Central Luzon with 112.

The DOH has also recorded 203 deaths due to leptospirosis. This figure is 13.9 percent higher compared to the 131 cases recorded during the same period last year.

Leptospirosis is "an illness transmitted through mud or water contaminated by the urine of infected animals," the DOH said.

"Cases of leptospirosis peak during the rainy season and the illness may spread where flood occurs," it added.

Symptoms of the leptospirosis include high fever, muscle pain, eye redness, chills, severe headache, vomiting, diarrhea, or yellowish skin discoloration, the DOH said.
