'Removal' of SHS program may not be a part K to 12 review: DepEd
While the K to 12 program has yet to fulfill the promise of employment for its graduates, the Department of Education (DepEd) maintained that the possible removal of the Senior High School (SHS) program may not be a part of the K to 12 review.

“Our direction for SHS is not kung itutuloy or hindi itutuloy (whether to continue or not),” DepEd Spokesperson Michael Poa said on Friday, Sept. 30 during the DepEd-OVP joint presser.
“Ang (The) direction is that the promise of K to 12 is that when our learners graduate after Grade 12, they are employable pero hindi nangyarari yan san ngayon (but that is not happening now),” he said.
The SHS program or Grades 11 and 12 are the additional two years in the country’s basic education cycle.
Rolled out in 2016, SHS seeks to produce students that are “holistically developed, equipped with 21st century skills and prepared for the future, regardless of their chosen paths, may it be higher education, attainment of middle-level skills, employment or entrepreneurship.”
In SHS, students are required to go through a core curriculum and subjects under a track of their choice: Academic; Technical-Vocational-Livelihood; and Sports and Arts.
“The direction is to try to align the skills, especially the tech-voc track, to the industry demand there’s misalignment,” Poa said in a mix of English and Filipino.
“The skills learned are not what the industry is looking for so they do not become employable,” he added.
