DepEd needs P1.17B for repair, rehabilitation of 'Karding'-hit schools
The Department of Education (DepEd) on Friday, Sept. 30, said that P1.17 billion is the current estimated cost for the repair or rehabilitation of schools that have sustained damages in the aftermath of super typhoon Karding.

Citing preliminary assessment from six regions which include Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), National Capital Region (NCR), Regions 1, 2, 3, and 5 as of Sept. 29, DepEd Spokesperson Michael Poa said in a press conference said that there is a total of 165 schools with infrastructure damages and 386 totally damaged classrooms.
The estimated cost of repairs for these schools, he said, is P1.17 billion. However, Poa noted that the number of schools affected by “Karding” is a “moving number” --- thus, it changes based on the reports resulting from day-to-day field assessments.
Of 561 schools used as Evacuation Centers (ECs), Poa said that only 92 schools are being used as temporary shelters by the affected families.

Poa explained that DepEd personnel --- particularly the members of the quick response team --- have been on the ground to do assessments.
“We are identifying the extent of damages in schools and how many schools with infra damage,” he explained.
To ensure learning continuity among learners in the affected areas, Poa said that schools were directed to switch to alternative delivery modes --- which are distance or blended learning.

“We are also coordinating with various LGUs if they have available temporary learning spaces that students can use,” Poa said in a mix of English and Filipino.
Poa said that Temporary Learning Spaces (TLS) will be put up in areas where there are no available areas to accommodate the displaced learners.
“We are already looking to download funds in these regions so they can start with whatever they need to do or other interventions,” he added.
