DepEd eyes hiring more teaching, non-teaching personnel to lessen teachers' workload
Recognizing the concerns of teachers regarding their current workload, the Department of Education (DepEd) eyes the possible hiring of more teaching and non-teaching personnel in 2023.

“If needed, next year, DepEd plans to hire additional non-teaching personnel --- we will do that,” said Education Spokesperson Michael Poa during the joint press conference of DepEd and OVP on Friday, Sept. 30.
DepEd, he added, is also hiring more teachers to help ensure that the teaching load will be lessened.
Teachers’ groups have been complaining of heavy workloads wherein they go beyond six hours of teaching or eight hours of work --- including administrative tasks --- in a day.

DepEd, on its part, also recognized the need to free teachers from some of their tasks --- especially those that are not directly related to teaching.
Given this, Poa said that there are various initiatives related to the workload concern of teachers.
DepEd, he explained, is looking into discussing with local government units (LGUs) to exclude teachers from activities initiated or organized by the local government.
“Masyadong maraming activities yung teachers on the ground, galing sa LGU for example, marami silang activities or participation kung saan kailangan nila lumahok sa LGUs (The teachers on the ground have too many activities, from the LGU for example, they have many activities where they have to participate in the LGUs),” Poa said.
“Ang direction is to talk to LGUs and see if pwede na i-excuse na yung ga guro natin sa ganyang activities (The direction is to talk to LGUs and see if it is possible to excuse our teachers from such activities,” he added.
Poa noted that both in the DepEd central and field offices, there was also a directive not to require personnel to participate in such activities to “lessen their load.”
Moreover, Poa said that a tool is being developed which will help identify the administrative tasks that are being asked of teachers. “It’s already under review by our legal department,” he explained.
The tool, Poa said, aims to help balance the workload of teachers by giving the “purely administrative tasks” to non-teaching personnel.
