Geje Eustaquio on Xiong - Lee trilogy: 'In MMA, weight and size are big factors'

It’s going to be a trilogy for the ages when ONE Women’s Strawweight World Champion “The Panda” Xiong Jing Nan takes on ONE Atomweight World Champion “Unstoppable” Angela Lee for the former’s strap.  

The trilogy takes place in the main event of ONE Fight Night 2 this Saturday, Oct. 1, at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, and fans and athletes alike are excited for the two athletes to decide who’s the most dominant woman in the promotion.  

This includes former ONE Flyweight World Champion Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio, who’s as pumped as anyone for this match. In fact, he believes that it’s going to be ultra competitive considering that these two women have been dominating their respective divisions for a long time.  

However, when pushed to give a prediction, the Filipino wushu star is siding with Xiong, citing that the biggest advantage the Chinese athlete has in this match is her experience in the division.  

“In Xiong Jing Nan’s division, she’s really strong. That’s her natural weight. If asked to pick the winner, I’ll go with Xiong Jing Nan,” he said. 

“That’s not to underestimate Angela, though. She’s a proven warrior, someone who’s really well rounded. But this is the strawweight division, and in MMA, weight and size are big factors.”  

Looking at the duo’s history, Eustaquio may have a point.  

The two first met in 2019, when Lee moved up to the strawweight division to challenge Xiong and, after a back-and-forth affair, "The Panda” stopped Lee in the fifth round.  

Seven months later, Xiong moved down to Lee’s weight class to try and snatch the atomweight belt, and it was pretty much the same back-and-forth forray, albeit with a different ending.  

With seconds left in the match, Lee evened the score, submitting Xiong to continue her dominant reign at atomweight.  

Eustaquio expects another finish in this match, but he sees Xiong stopping Lee. However, he wouldn’t be surprised if the Singaporean-American pulls off a shocker either. 

“I see a finish,” he said. "I’m siding with Xiong to win via referee stoppage, though I could also see a scenario where Angela wins via submission.”
