Cop, friend charged with homicide over death of another police officer in QC

The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) announced Tuesday, Sept. 27, the filing of homicide charges against the police officer and his friend who allegedly shot and killed another cop in Quezon City on Sunday, Sept. 25.

The QCPD identified the suspects as Master Sgt. Amando Gonzales, 50, assigned to the QCPD Talipapa Station (PS 3), and Ronnie Fumar, 55, of Brgy. Sto. Domingo. Cainta, Rizal.

Based on initial investigation, Gonzales invited the victim, Staff Sgt. Jonas Trinidad, 37, also assigned to the PS 3, Fumar, and some of their friends to his house at around 9 a.m. on Sunday for a drinking spree to celebrate his birthday.

At first, Gonzales’ wife took Trinidad’s .45-caliber handgun and kept it inside their house while the group was drinking.

Gonzales returned the gun to Trinidad after their drinking session.

Police said that at about 5:00 p.m., Trinidad suddenly started to break beer bottles that caused injury to Gonzales.

Gonzales then splashed a glass of water on Trinidad, who immediately pulled out his handgun. The two engaged in a gun scuffle.

Citing the statements of witnesses and the suspect’s wife, police said Gonzales sustained gunshot wounds and was immediately brought to the Commonwealth Hospital and Medical Center (CHMC) for medical treatment.

Upon arrival of responding members of QCPD Pasong Putik Station (PS 16), they saw Trinidad with gunshot wounds, sitting near the gate of the house.

The police rushed Trinidad to the CHMC where he was declared dead on arrival.

Recovered from the crime scene were seven fired cartridge cases, three deformed bullets, one holster, one sling bag, and assorted keys.

Gonzales is currently confined at Commonwealth Hospital and Medical Center (CHMC), while Fumar was brought to Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit (CIDU).

The QCPD filed homicide charges against the suspects before the Quezon City Prosecutor's Office.
