Asian Games now part of boxing qualification for Paris Olympics

The Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) is building up the best strategies for its athletes following the new qualification system for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

ABAP executive director Marcus Manalo said they are looking at international tournaments and training camps for more exposures after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board announced recently that the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China will now be part of the qualification system for the Paris Games.

No details yet on how many Olympic berths are allocated in the Asian Games.

“This is like hitting two birds with one stone. We’re preparing for the Asian Games and at the same time, qualifying for the Olympics. So their training and exposures in the coming months will be critical,” said Manalo during the Philippine Sportswriters Association forum held online Tuesday, Sept. 27.

Boxing went home with one silver medal courtesy of Rogen Ladon and one bronze from Carlo Paalam in the 2018 Asian Games held in Indonesia. The last time the boxing team went home with a gold medal was in the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games courtesy of Rey Saludar.

As early as next month, a team will be competing in the Asian Elite Men’s and Women’s Boxing Championships in Amman, Jordan from Oct. 20 to Nov. 13.

Prior to the tournament, the team will undergo a two-week training camp starting Oct. 14 also in Amman.

At the moment, the national team is training extensively in Baguio City in preparation for the said tournament.

“We’ve already identified some areas of weakness or places where our athletes can improve and implemented it during training. And I think some of the results are paying off during training,” said national team coach Don Abnett.

Abnett added they are also looking forward to the 2023 Southeast Asian Games in Phnom Penh, Cambodia where the PH team seeks to eclipse its medal haul of three gold, one silver and five bronzes.

“When you build up for the SEAG, you’re building up for the Asian Games as well,” Abnett said. “It’s going to be tricky in the SEAG, because of the number of slots allowed to compete, but we’re always looking at our best chances.”

Aside from looking at international training and camps, ABAP also plans to host a training camp, hopefully in a facility currently being built in Antipolo.
