DPWH starts road clearing; 9 roads in Luzon still impassable
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) on Monday, Sept. 26, launched simultaneous clearing operations in areas hammered by super typhoon “Karding”.
In Metro Manila, nine District Engineering Offices (DEOs) led the de-clogging of inlets, cleaning of debris/fallen trees, and culverts; hauling and clearing of spoils, and pothole patching was being done to restore the roadways.
In Region 1, the DPWH Ilocos Norte First DEO sent a clearing team to clear the landslide in the Manila North Road that affected the main roads connecting to Sitio Banquero in Barangay Pancian, Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte.
The DPWH Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), on the other hand, conducted clearing operations in Mt. Province – Cagayan via Tabuk-Enrile Road and experienced soil collapse during the onslaught of the super typhoon.
In Regions 2 and 3, their respective DEO sent one payloader and dump truck to clear the Bambang-Kasibu-Solano Road; and Daang Maharlika Brgy. Mayapyap, Cabanatuan City; Sta. Rosa-Tarlac Road; and Gapan-Fort Magsaysay Road, accordingly.
The Zambales 2nd DEO has fast-tracked the clearing operations on Jose Abad Santos Avenue in Olongapo City, while the Aurora Province DEO has been clearing the Diteki River Detour Road as of press time.
A situational report from Pampanga 3rd DEO said the maintenance team is currently conducting clearing operations in Manila North Road along Barangay Tabun, Mabalacat City; Dau-NLEX Road; and in the Arayat-Mabalacat-Magalang Road.
9 roads in Luzon still impassable
DPWH Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan said at least nine national roads in Luzon were rendered impassable as of 5 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 26.
They are Kennon Road; Manila North Road in Sitio Banquero, Brgy. Pancian, Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte; Bambang-Kasibu-Solano Road in Nueva Vizcaya; NRJ - Villa Sur San Pedro-Cabuaan-Ysmael-Disimungal Road in Madella, Quirino; Nueva Ecija-Aurora Road in Aurora; Daang Maharlika Road in San Leonardo, Nueva Ecija; Tarlac-Sta. Rosa Road in Jaen, Nueva Ecija; Concepcion -Lapaz in Tarlac; and Ternate-Nasugbu Road in Cavite.
Bonoan said they were closed due to safety reasons, damaged pavement, landslides, flooding, and fallen electrical posts.
He said the DPWH also monitored three roads with limited access namely the Apalit-Macabebe- Masantol Road in Calsada Bayu, Sta. Rita, Macabebe, Pampanga due to flooding; Olangapo- Bugallon Road in Cabanang, Zambales due to flooding; and the Rizal Bdry.-Famy-Quezon Bdry. Road in Laguna due to flooding.
“Deployed Quick Response Teams in typhoon-affected areas are stepping up the clearing operations to restore mobility and support the government’s relief operations in hard-hit areas,” said Bonoan.
