600 families seek shelter from 'Karding' in Pasig

Over 600 families or 2,386 individuals sought shelter in various evacuation centers in Pasig City from Sunday night, Sept. 25 to early Monday morning, Sept. 26, as strong winds and torrential rains brought about by typhoon “Karding” battered Luzon.

The Pasig Office of Social Welfare and Development (OSWD) recorded the following tally of evacuees in several evacuation centers in the city as of 5:10 a.m.

SCHOOL SITES:

  • Santolan Elementary School, Brgy. Santolan - 194 families, around 835 individuals
  • Bagong Ilog Elementary School, Brgy. Bagong Ilog - 17 families, 52 individuals
  • Rosario Elementary School, Brgy. Rosario - 30 families, 111 individuals
  • Elementary Annex, Brgy. Maybunga - 80 families, 356 individuals

NON-SCHOOL SITES:

  • Third floor, Sta. Rosa Barangay Hall - seven families, 26 individuals
  • Ilaya Covered Court, Brgy. Santolan - 168 families, 606 individuals
  • Manggahan Multi-Purpose Hall, Brgy. Manggahan - 36 families, 131 individuals
  • Bliss Covered Court, Brgy. Sta. Lucia - two families, five individuals
  • Stella Maris, Brgy. Maybunga - 71 families, 264 individuals
  • Rosario Multi-Purpose / Blue Grass, Brgy. Rosario - 17 families, 75 individuals
  • Susana Covered Court, Brgy. Caniogan - 11 families, 46 individuals
  • 4th floor, Ugong Brgy. Hall - two families, 10 individuals

As of 9 p.m. on Sunday, 14 families or 40 individuals preemptively evacuated to their respective evacuation centers.

Five families (20 individuals) went to the Barangay Hall of Barangay Sta. Rosa, while nine families (20 individuals) proceeded to the Ilaya Covered Court in Barangay Santolan.

Because some of Pasig City’s barangays lie near the stretch of the Marikina River, the local government also based their evacuation on the river’s water level status.

As the river reached the second alarm, or over 17 meters, Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto urged residents on Sunday night to follow the authorities’ evacuation order.

Community kitchens in the evacuation centers were installed where hot meals were prepared. The distribution of relief goods and hot meals are ongoing for the evacuees in the centers.

Members of the City Health Department, City Epidemiology Surveillance Unit (CESU), and the Barangay Health Centers conducted check ups and antigen tests for symptomatic evacuees. They als gave out medicines.

A red rainfall warning was issued in Metro Manila by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Center (NDRRMC) at 10 p.m. on Sunday.

Metro Manila was placed under Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal (TCWS) No. 3 by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

As of 7:30 a.m., Sotto downgraded the city's alert level from Red to Blue. The city's incident management or command team, headed by the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO), was also demobilized.

"Salamat at hindi naging ganun kalakas ang bagyo dito sa Pasig. Libo rin ang na-evacuate pero minimal damage. Let's pray for the harder hit areas (Thankfully, the storm did not hit our city hard. Thousands have evacuated, but there are minimal damage)," Sotto said in a social media post on Monday morning.

Some of the evacuees have begun to return to their homes as of 11:50 a.m.

Sanitation teams are being deployed to clean the emptied evacuation sites.
