PH, Spain mark 500th year of world's first circumnavigation

The governments of the Philippines and Spain have marked the 500th anniversary of the world's first circumnavigation by conducting a grand naval exercise in the waters of Spain.

Spain's King Felipe VI and Philippine Ambassador to Spain Philippe Lhuillier attended the ceremony held in the coastal wasters of Sanlucar de Barrameda to conclude Spain's year-long celebration of the world's first round-the-world voyage led by Spanish navigator Juan Sebastián Elcano in 1522.

Aboard the landing helicopter dock (LHD) Juan Carlos I in Cadiz, King Felipe VI and Lhuillier were joined by the Diplomatic Corps during the event.

King Felipe VI also paid tribute to the 18 sailors that embarked on the journey.

Also attended the celebration were envoys of the countries were the voyage passed through, such as Belgium, Cape Verde, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy and Portugal.
