DOLE discusses labor concerns with workers' federation

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on Friday, Sept. 23, hosted a dialogue with a labor group to tackle progressive talks with the sectoral organizations in promoting freedom of organization in workplaces.

Labor Secretary Bienvenido E. Laguesma led the social dialogue with the Federation of Free Workers (FFW) Board Members.

The meeting tackled issues on freedom of association, labor representation in tripartite bodies, issues and concerns of health workers, and occupational safety and health issues among others.

Laguesma said the DOLE will embrace with open arms the reforms raised by the FFW if these are needed to ensure that both stakeholders in the labor sector will benefit from them.

The FFW is a registered labor federation to the DOLE’s National Tripartite Industrial Peace Council (NTIPC).

The labor chief was joined by Undersecretaries Benedicto Ernesto R. Bitonio Jr. and Ciriaco A. Lagunzad III.

According to FFW National President Atty. Sonny Matula, the social dialogue between the DOLE and the FFW has opened a channel to settle labor issues and programs concerning the labor sector.

Matula is also the concurrent chairperson of the Nagkaisa Labor Coalition, the biggest federation of labor organizations in the Philippines.

The labor leader hailed the initiatives of Laguesma to acknowledge the importance of labor associations in maintaining peace and harmony in the workplace.

Laguesma, on the other hand, welcomed the labor leaders as he administered the oath-taking of the new board members of FFW.

The FFW Board was represented by Matula, Atty. Allan Montaño, Jun Mendoza Ramirez, and Board Secretary Danilo Laserna.
