BACOLOD CITY – The Philippine Army’s 94th Infantry Battalion discovered a cache of ammunition and explosives in Barangay Mahalang, Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental on Thursday, Sept 22.

Brig. Gen. Inocencio Pasaporte, commander of 303rd Infantry Brigade (IBde), said that eight anti-personnel mines, two anti-tank mines, and 1,932 rounds of .30 caliber machine gun were recovered buried near a creek.
Pasaporte said that these war materials were believed left by the New People's Army (NPA), after they vacated their temporary encampment in the area.
According to the Army, the anti-personnel mines are designed against human targets to either kill or injure them, and are capable of damaging light and heavy vehicles.
The anti-tank mines on the other hand are designed to destroy or damage heavy vehicles including tanks and armored vehicles.
Pasaporte said that the anti-personnel mines were similar to the explosives used by the NPA in the ambush against policemen in Binalbagan town early this year, which left two of them wounded.
The Army was able to locate the war materials after they received information from their contacts and former members of Central Negros 2.
Pasaporte said the recovered war materials are now under the custody of the 94th IB and will be subjected to forensic examination, before the explosives are extricated.
Meanwhile, Lt. Col. Van Donald Almonte, 94th IB commander, thanked the dedication and cooperation of concerned civilians to end the insurgency in Himamaylan City.
