DHSUD to finish Yolanda housing project backlog this year

Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) intends to finish this year its backlog in connection with the Yolanda housing project.

This was learned during House plenary debates on the proposed 2023 budget of the DHSUD worth P3.951 billion.

Committee on Appropriations Vice Chairman Navotas lone district Rep. Toby Tiangco sponsored and defended the DHSUD budget, which was the last budget to be tackled on the floor Wednesday, Sept. 21.


Under the program, a total of 209,447 housing units are expected to be built.

Of the figure, 5,290 units are for Region IV; 400 units for Region V; 119,290 units for Region VI, and 20,433 for Region VII.

For Region 8, there are 63,582 units alloted, while another 442 are for Region 13.

Tiangco bared during the interpellation of the agency's budget that a total of 200,000 housing units have been finished.

Noting that there are roughly 9,000 units left to be erected as per the project's target, Tiangco told the plenary that the DHSUD aims to complete the construction works this year.

Wednesday's plenary debates lasted over 11 hours before it was suspended at past 8 p.m.


"Yolanda" (international name: Haiyan) was a super typhoon that struck the country’s central islands in November 2013. It killed at least 6,000 people and triggered a humanitarian crisis due to the sheer destruction it caused.
