Village dad, farmer wounded in Samar shooting

TACLOBAN CITY – A barangay councilor and a farmer were wounded in a shooting incident on Thursday, Sept. 1, in the interior town of Matuguinao, Samar.

Police identified the victims as Jovito dela Cruz, 56, farmer; and Margie Diaz, barangay councilor, residents of Barangay Salvacion.

Initial investigation disclosed that Dela Cruz was having a drinking spree with friend “Kleto” in his house at around 6 p.m. when the gunman, Richard dela Cruz, suddenly appeared, shouting and looking for the victim.

Jovito went out to check but he was shot by the suspect in the right arm which went through the right side of his chest.

Richard also fired at the house of Diaz and was wounded in her right knee.

The suspect fled and a pursuit operation is being conducted by the Matuguinao police against him.

The victims were taken to the Matuguinao Rural Health Unit and then referred to a Calbayog City, Samar General Hospital for further medical attention.
