CEBU CITY – The municipality of Tuburan, Cebu on Saturday, Sept. 17, planted at least 11,000 bamboo seedlings to mark World Bamboo Day on Sunday, Sept. 18.
Hundreds joined the activity, led by Mayor Aljun Diamante and his brother Danilo, vice mayor, which was held simultaneously along with a coastal clean-up.

It was also attended by officials of government agencies, members of various socio-civic-organizations, and former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque.
Aljun said that 11,000 bamboo seedlings were planted in 47 barangays. Tuburan has 54 barangays but the bamboo-planting was held in the mountain barangays only.
The activity kicked off in an area in Barangay Kabankalan where locals and guests could enjoy the picturesque overlooking view of the Tañon Strait seascape.
“Kabankalan is the heart of Tuburan. This is where me and my siblings were born,” said Aljun.
Black bamboos have been planted in the area in the past but the planting of 11,000 seedlings of different bamboo species will make the area a tourist attraction.
“This area will become a bamboo kingdom. Soon these seedlings will form a bamboo tunnel that will be very attractive to local and foreign tourists,” the mayor said.
Aljun added that each barangay has formed a people’s organization that will look after the growth of the seedlings. “We will make sure that there will be a continuity,” said Aljun.
The mayor said that the seedlings came from Fr. Vic Labao of the Kabilin Natures and Bamboo Center in Balamban, Cebu.
The bamboos were sold at a discounted price. “The bamboo seedlings are normally sold for P500 each but they were given to us for only P200 each and we are very thankful that we got a lot of donors who helped us purchase the seedlings,” the mayor said.
Danilo said the 11,000 seedlings will eventually become a source of livelihood of the residents as the vast bamboo plantation is expected to spur tourism activities in Tuburan.
Tuburan is known for its vast coffee plantation which has provided livelihood to residents.
“Let us take care of these bamboos similar to how we are taking care of the Tuburan coffee. This will also be a big help for our livelihood. These bamboos will also have a huge impact on helping protect our environment,” the vice mayor said.
