'Squid Game' director says he regrets killing two characters in hit Korean series

Director Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed that he regretted killing two important characters in Netflix’s hit Korean series “Squid Game.”

After returning to South Korea, the director and cast of “Squid Game” held a press conference on Sept. 16 to celebrate their win at the 74th Emmy Awards.

“Squid Game” took home six Emmy awards including best actor for a drama series for Lee Jung-jae.

Hwang Dong-hyuk said the filming for season 2 of “Squid Game” will start next year.

"My next plan is to shoot the next season of 'Squid Game'. I'm still writing it, but I believe we'll kick off our shooting next year," he said, SBS News reported.

He added, "It's probably going to take about two years from now on; I'm guessing that it'll be out in 2024. I initially planned on working on a movie after 'Squid Game', but I felt like that would make the gap between the first season and second season too wide that I've decided to just get 'Squid Game 2' done first."

Hwang Dong-hyuk is having a dilemma for season 2 as some of the characters in “Squid Game” have been killed in the series.

"Every character that the viewers loved has died in the series, so I don't really know what to do at the moment. I had no idea that the series would make it this big! I honestly killed them too fast... I'm sorry!" he said.

He said he regretted killing Kang Sae-byeok (played by actress Jung Ho-yeon) and Ji-yeong (played by Emmy winner Lee Yoo-mi) in “Squid Game.”

In the series, Kang Sae-byeok is a North Korean defector while Ji-yeong is a newly-released prisoner.

"I really want to make them return from the dead, so I have lots in my head these days. I do want to bring 'Ji-yeong' back to life, but her close friend 'Sae-byeok' has died as well, so... I don't know what to do,” the director said.

“Squid Game” tells the story of 456 debt-ridden people who enter deadly children’s games to win a prize of 45.6 billion won ($32.88 million).
