Alex Eala: Give attention to other sports

Alex Eala was completely surprised to have so many Filipinos who closely followed her tennis journey at the 2022 US Open in New York.

There was not a hint of expectation coming from the 17-year-old about being backed up by her countrymen abroad and back at home, but Eala received it in true Filipino fashion—with countless billboards and social media postings of her history-making win.

With her games taking place in the wee hours of the day in Manila time, she couldn’t believe those “who tuned in to watch.”

“The Philippines is a basketball and I would say also a volleyball-dominated country. People tend to enjoy those more, I think it’s a good thing they’re starting to appreciate more sports and I think it’s important that we give attention to all of the athletes,” said Eala during her virtual press conference courtesy of her main supporter Globe.

Her observation especially rang true with the upcoming co-hosting of the country of the 2023 FIBA World Cup which began its one-year countdown last month in big celebrations.

Whether it was through paying for a live streaming service or staying up late at night to catch the latest developments of each match, the junior champion felt thankful for the continued support from her fellow Pinoys no matter how small or grand it was.
