Manila City Mayor Maria Sheila "Honey" Lacuna-Pangan on Thursday, Sept. 15, said the city government is adopting the national government's policy on the voluntary use of face masks in open spaces in the city.
City Ordinance No. 8091 on the voluntary use of face masks in open spaces was signed by Lacuna on Tuesday, Sept. 13, following the issuance of Executive Order No. 3 by President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. on Monday, Sept. 12, that mandates the optional use of face masks outdoors.
Under the city ordinance, the non-wearing of face masks in open and non-crowded outdoor areas with good ventilation will be allowed.
You can now voluntarily use face masks when you are in open spaces, as long as these places are not a super spreader, for example Quiapo, Divisoria, where many of our people go to shop, especially now that the holiday season is coming)," Lacuna said in a Facebook live on Thursday.
Lacuna emphasized that the use of face masks indoors remains mandatory.
She encouraged city residents, including senior citizens and immunocompromised individuals to continue to follow the minimum health protocols.
We encourage you to continue using facemasks for your protection, especially our senior citizens who have not yet been vaccinated or who have not yet completed their vaccines and booster shots, and of course, our immunocompromised citizens)," the mayor said.
She also reminded the public that the number of cases of Covid-19 in the city increased this week compared to last week.
The number of Covid cases continues to increase here in our city. Last week our number of Covid cases was only around 160, now our number is more than 300)," she said.
Lacuna also called on those who are not yet fully vaccinated to get vaccinated and to comply with the minimum health standards.
The city recorded 76 new Covid-19 active cases, bringing to 317 the total number of active cases in the city as of Sept. 15.
