Member of notorious carnapping, robbery group nabbed in Makati

A member of a notorious criminal gang was nabbed by the police at a checkpoint in Makati City Tuesday, Sept. 13.

Police identified the suspect as Joseph Caniban, 40, alleged member of the Joshua Factora Robbery and Carnapping Group which is also involved in the proliferation of illegal drugs in Makati City.

Caniban was arrested at an “Oplan Sita” checkpoint on Estrella St. in Brgy. Guadalupe Nuevo, where he was flagged down by the police while riding a motorcycle for "driving without a safety helmet".

The suspect also failed to present his driver's license and the motorcycle's certificate of registration.

Sensing his uneasy behaviour, the cops asked him to show the contents of his black sling bag, where they found a .38-calbier revolver loaded with four live bullets.

Upon his arrest, it was also found out that the motorcycle he was using was stolen on Sept. 12 on F.B Harrison St. in Pasay City and is owned by a Pasay City traffic aid.

The motorcycle owner said he will file a criminal complaint against Caniban before the Pasay City Prosecutor’s Office.

The police said Caniban will face charges for violation of Republic Act 10591 (illegal possession of firearms and ammunition).
