DOH notes rise in leptospirosis cases

The Department of Health (DOH) has recorded a rise in leptospirosis cases in the country.

A total of 1,770 leptospirosis cases were reported from Jan. 1 to Aug. 27, the DOH stated in its latest report released on Wednesday, Sept. 14.

“Cumulatively, cases this year is 36 percent higher compared to the reported cases during the same period in 2021” which was 1,299, the DOH said.

The top three regions with the highest number of leptospirosis cases were Metro Manila with 378, Western Visayas with 210, and Cagayan Valley with 195.

The DOH also noted that 327 leptospirosis cases were logged on July 31 to Aug 27. The three regions that recorded the most number of cases during this period were Metro Manila with 112, Davao region with 31, and Western Visayas with 29.

The Health department also reported that Cagayan Valley, Bicol region, Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Davao region, and Cordillera Administrative Region “breached the alert and epidemic threshold within the past four morbidity weeks” or from July 31 to Aug. 27.

“However, no clustering was noted nationwide,” the DOH said.

A total of 244 deaths due to leptospirosis were also registered. Of this figure, 14 patients died in January; 11 in February; 23 in March; 32 in April; 29 deaths May; 29 deaths in June; 54 in July; and 52 in August.
