Barba, Guadaña power Lyceum past Mapua

John Barba and Mclaude Guadaña connived to lift Lyceum past Mapua, 76-67, and take their first win in the men's basketball tournament of the NCAA Season 98 Wednesday, Sept. 14, at the Filoil EcoOil in San Juan.

Barba spearheaded the Pirates with 16 points and three rebounds while Guadaña chalked up 13 points built on three treys, including a dagger with less than three minutes in the payoff period.

After a nip-and-tuck affair in the first half, Lyceum went all out with guns blazing in the third quarter to erect a 10-point lead, 59-49, heading into the payoff period.

The Pirates, who bounced back from a tough 86-69 loss against the St. Benilde Blazers, never looked back at that point and maintained their sharp form all throughout en route to a 1-1 record.

"Actually, it's a very, very big win for us na everybody knows Mapua is a strong team, they are a contender last year," said Lyceum head coach Gilbert Malabanan. "Sabi ko lang sa players namin na we have to follow the system, we have to play aggressively -- offensively and defensively.

"And nakita ko naman sa kanila nung naglaro talagang defensively sinunod 'yong system namin, naging organized sila, naging disciplined sila, and we got that win. Of course, sa offense namin, I like the way my team ran our offense because they are now sharing the ball," he added.

Malabanan also addressed that unlike against the Blazers, this time around, his wards showed maturity in terms of ball rotation and admitted that they had jitters in the first game.

Still up by 10 points, 69-59, Guadaña fired a dagger trey with 2:52 left which pretty much sealed the deal for Lyceum with a 72-59 lead.

The Cardinals tried to retaliate and mount a short comeback with a 7-0 spurt but the gap was too much to overcome and the time wasn't on their side as they sustained a 1-1 slate on an upset loss.

Paolo Hernandez paced Mapua with 16 points and nine rebounds while Toby Agustin and Warren Bonifacio posted 12 points apiece and combined for 21 rebounds.
