Fendi celebrates the legacy of the Baguette bag at NYFW 2022

The Italian fashion house celebrates the 25th anniversary of its iconic bag with Marc Jacobs, Tiffany & Co., Sarah Jessica Parker, and Linda Evangelista

Throughout its run, “Sex and the City” has produced so many fashion moments. From the naked dress and the tutu to the Vivienne Westwood wedding dress and a pair of blue Manolo Blahnik heels, there is no shortage of style inspiration in the show. One of those moments is when the show’s lead Carrie Bradshawgot mugged on the street and said the iconic line, “It’s not a bag, it’s a Baguette.” And just like that, the Fendi’s arm candy solidified its status as an It bag.

Designed by Silvia Venturini Fendi in 1997, the Baguette, featuring the double F-logo clasp and a rectangular shape, could be held like a loaf of bread under the arms. This time, the signature bag gets a makeover with the help of Marc Jacobs, Tiffany & Co., and Porter, in celebration of its 25th anniversary. 

Unveiled during Fendi’s show at New York Fashion Week were its latest resort collection and the reinterpretations of the Baguette. Marc Jacobs gave the bag a street look. Tiffany & Co.’s design is more regal with sterling silver, enamel, croco, white gold, and diamonds. While Japanese brand Porter played with a masculine aesthetic. 

The runway show featured more than 50 looks, 10 of which were designed by Jacobs. Ending the show was supermodel Linda Evangelista, marking her return to the runway. Witnessing the show are some of the fashion industry’s biggest names such as Kim Kardashian, Kate Moss, Grace Jones, and Carrie Bradshaw herself, Sarah Jessica Parker. 

“It’s a celebration of a time, of the moment the Baguette became famous,” Kim Jones, Fendi’s artistic director of womenswear, said. “I relate that time to a sense of freedom in excess and fun—both qualities the Baguette possesses.”
