‘Habagat’ to still affect parts of Central, Southern Luzon; LPA to bring scattered rains over Caraga

(MANILA BULLETIN)

The southwest monsoon or “habagat” may still bring rains over parts of Central and Southern Luzon, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Tuesday, Aug. 9.

In its 11 a.m. advisory, PAGASA said the southwest monsoon may bring “light to moderate with at times heavy rains” over Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, and Kalayaan Islands in the next 24 hours.

“Under these conditions, scattered flooding and rain-induced landslides are likely, especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards as identified in hazard maps and in areas with significant antecedent rainfall,” it warned.

Meanwhile, PAGASA said the low pressure area at 630 kilometers east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur remained less likely to become a tropical depression.

Its effect has weakened but may still bring scattered light to moderate rain showers and thunderstorms over Caraga in the next 24 hours, the State weather bureau said.

The rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to the habagat and localized thunderstorms.

PAGASA advised the public to stay vigilant as severe thunderstorms, which are often accompanied by sudden heavy rains, lightning, thunder, gusty winds, and sometimes hail, could also trigger flash floods or landslides.
