After Beyoncé's lyric shade on the Birkin, are we about to see the end of Hermès' iconic bag?

Beyhives all over the world are buzzing about Grammy award-winning singer Beyoncé’s newest album “Renaissance.” Released last July 29, the seventh studio album of the music superstar gives everyone a glimpse of her reflections during the pandemic through a blend of music genres, celebrating themes of escapism, self-assurance, self-expression, hedonism, and pleasure.

“Renaissance” album also gives everyone a taste of the 40-year-old singer’s views on fashion and culture today. Beyoncé isn’t shy in dropping designer labels in her lyrics. In her “Heated” song, the pop diva sings about having Chanel and Tiffany. In “Summer Renaissance,” she mentions luxury labels such as Versace, Bottega, Prada, Balenciaga, Louis Vuitton, Dior, and Givenchy followed by the lyric, “So elegant and raunchy, this hot couture I'm flaunting.” But what comes after it sparked debate among music lovers and fashionistas, as she sings, “This Telfar bag imported, Birkins, them s

in storage.”

After listening to the song's ending lines, people can't help but share their reactions online, some even marking it as the end of Hermès’ exclusive and legendary arm candy. But is it so? According to a report by Vogue Business, Beyoncé’s shout-out to Telfar influenced people’s shopping attitude toward the brand as it boosted its views to 85 percent on resale platform TheRealReal, and a 47 percent rise in searches, page views, and “add to bag” on luxury resale site Fashionphile.

Telfar is a black-owned fashion label led by Liberian-American designer Telfar Clemens. The designer is known for “democratizing luxury with his accessible price points, utilitarian designs, and drop model." in 2020, it was honored by the CFDA with its American Accessories Designer of the Year award. Its bags bearing the brand's signature T logo have been carried by stars such as Dua Lipa, Selena Gomez, Zoe Kravitz, and, of course, Beyoncé.

But hope is not lost for the French luxury brand. Vogue Business also states that the iconic bag also benefited from Beyoncé’s shady lyrics. From July 28 to 31, Birkin searches have increased to 33 percent on Rebag’s online store, higher than Telfar’s 21 percent during the period.
