Suarez puts WBA Asia belt on the line vs Yap

Charly Suarez puts his World Boxing Association (WBA) Asia super featherweight title on the line when he takes on compatriot Mark John Yap later today, Aug. 7, at the Elorde Sports Complex in Paranaque City.

The 33-year-old Olympian hopes to boost his international campaign by beating Yap, aside from keeping his unblemished record of 11 wins on top of seven knockouts.

Robert Hill, Suarez's promoter is planning to take the Filipino champion in Vietnam for a main event in Vietnam.

But Suarez shifts his focus on fighting against Yap, who has a 30-16 record built on 15 KOs.

"This is a very important fight because I need to keep on winning to improve my world rankings and also keep my unbeaten record intact," said the 2016 Rio Olympic boxer, who tipped the scales at 129.2 lbs on Saturday, Aug. 6.

"I know he is eager to take my belt and is also looking at campaigning abroad once more should he beat me. With God's grace I will make sure victory will be mine Sunday night," added Suarez, who last saw action just last month with a unanimous decision win against Junny Salogaol.

Yap, for his part, weighed in at 129.2 lbs as well.

The 33-year-old Cagayan de Oro native hopes to recover from his three-match skid with the most recent against Jadier Herrera in Dubai last February.
