Lamitan police correct spot report saying man with Yumol surname gunned down

ZAMBOANGA CITY – The Lamitan City, Basilan police corrected a spot report Sunday, August 7, stating that a man with the same surname as Ateneo murder suspect Dr. Chao Tiao-Yumol was gunned down in Lamitan City.

The Lamitan police had earlier issued a spot report saying that a man with the same surname as Dr. Yumol was shot dead in Lamitan Saturday, August 6.

The report was picked up and published online by several media outlets before the police had become aware of the error in their own report.

The spot report initially stated that a rubber tapper by the name of Asdali Bhis y Isniyan Yumol was gunned down at his residence at past 9 p.m.

The victim had been identified by police as an uncle of Dr. Yumol, the suspect in the killing of ex-Lamitan Mayor Rose Furigay and two other persons last month.

Hours later, the Lamitan police corrected the spot report, and the victim was identified as Asdali Bhis y Isniyan, a man with no relation to Dr. Yumol.

The victim was reportedly sitting at the terrace of his residence in Sitio Muhibal, Barangay Campo Uno when he was gunned down by an unidentified man.

Asdali died on the spot from multiple bullet wounds.

Lamitan police, led by acting director Police Lt. Col. Tadzhabel Managola, recovered six fired cartridges and a clip of a Garand rifle at the crime scene.

Police have conducted pursuit operations for the gunman’s arrest.

Lawmen are still investigating the murder of Dr. Yumol’s father, Rolando, after his assassination last July 29.

No other relatives of Dr. Yumol have been killed after Rolando’s death.
