Metro Manila, other parts of PH may still experience rains due to LPA, 'habagat'

The low pressure area (LPA) and southwest monsoon or “habagat” may still bring rains over parts of the country in the next 24 hours, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Saturday, Aug. 6.

As of 3 a.m., the LPA was estimated 140 kilometers north-northwest of Dagupan City, Pangasinan.

PAGASA weather specialist Benison Estareja said the LPA was already over the West Philippine Sea after crossing the Bicol Region, Calabarzon, and Central Luzon in the last 24 hours.

He said the LPA will likely leave the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) within 24 hours but may continue to enhance the southwest monsoon even if it is already outside the PAR in the next few days.

PAGASA said cloudy skies, scattered rain showers, and thunderstorms may prevail over Metro Manila, Pangasinan, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan, Central Luzon, Bicol Region, Zamboanga Peninsula, and Visayas.

PAGASA warned against possible flash floods or landslides due to “moderate to at times heavy rains” in these areas.

Meanwhile, the rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to the habagat and localized thunderstorms.

PAGASA also advised the public to stay vigilant as flash floods or landslides may occur during severe thunderstorms, which are often accompanied by sudden heavy rains, lightning, thunder, gusty winds, and sometimes hail.
