LPA, ‘habagat’ bring rains over parts of PH

(MANILA BULLETIN)

A low pressure area (LPA) and the southwest monsoon, or “habagat,” will continue to bring scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over most parts of the country in the next 24 hours, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Friday afternoon, August 5.

PAGASA said the LPA, which was over the vicinity of Doña Remedios Trinidad, Bulacan at around 3 p.m., has continued to enhance the southwest monsoon.

The weather disturbance is “less likely” to develop into a tropical depression within 24 hours, but will continue to bring rains as it traverses Luzon this weekend.

PAGASA said the combined effects of the LPA and habagat is expected to bring “moderate to at times heavy rains” Metro Manila, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Isabela, mainland Cagayan, Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Central Luzon, Southern Luzon, Bicol Region, Western Visayas, Central Visayas, and Zamboanga Peninsula.

Under these conditions, scattered flooding and rain-induced landslides are likely, especially in the areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards as identified in the hazards maps and in areas with significant antecedent rainfall,” PAGASA warned.

Meanwhile, the rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to the habagat and localized thunderstorms.

PAGASA also advised the public to stay vigilant as flash floods or landslides may occur during severe thunderstorms, which are often accompanied by sudden heavy rains, lightning, thunder, gusty winds, and sometimes hail.
