'Justice for the unjustly executed': Gabriela condemns execution of activists in Myanmar

An alliance of women in the Philippines, on Friday, Aug. 5, condemned the execution of four pro-democracy activists in Myanmar.

“We stand in full solidarity with the peoples of Myanmar and all the peoples of the world in seeking social justice and true democracy. Fascist powers must be held to account for their mounting crimes against humanity,” said Gabriela in a press statement.

Sentenced to death in “closed-door trials,” the four activists named Kyaw Min Yu, Phyo Zeya Thaw, Hla Myo Aung, and Aung Thura Zaw were accused of “committing terror acts” and “helping a civilian resistance movement.”

This “unjust” act is a bold reminiscent of the same fascism suffered by the Filipino people from its government, Gabriela claimed, highlighting the recent attack against human rights defenders that led to the “extrajudicial arrest and detention” of four rights defenders in the Philippines named Elizabeth Magbanua, Alipio Juat, Ma. Elena Cortez, and Elgene Mungcal.

“The increasingly fascist measures unleashed not only by the military government of Myanmar, but by all fascist governments elsewhere in the world will do nothing to quash the unrest and growing resistance of the toiling masses. The only genuine road to just and lasting peace shall start with the resolution of the grave socioeconomic crises that have been brewing globally as a result of imperialism,” Gabriela reiterated.
