11-year-old girl from Dagupan wins 2 bronze medals in World Championships of Performing Arts in US

DAGUPAN CITY – An 11-year-old girl brought honor to this city when she bagged two bronze medals in the 25th Annual World Championships of Performing Arts in Anaheim, California from July 22 to 30.

Sophia Madaya Samonte, from Barangay Bonuan Boquig here, was among 60 Filipinos who competed in the event participated in by 60 countries across the globe.

Information gathered from the office of Mayor Belen Fernandez here said Samonte was the only Dagupeño and Pangasinense who took part in the Vocals Kids category.

She won the bronze medal in Vocal Pop and another bronze in Vocal World in her very first international competition.

Her mother Arly said that her daughter showed potential in singing at an early age.

Sophia had vocal training here and joined different local singing contests.

Arly said the journey to the World Championships of Performing Arts was difficult due to the pandemic but was worth it because her daughter did not come home empty-handed.

Sophia and Arly thanked Fernandez for her support in a courtesy call Thursday, August 4.

The Philippine team bagged 265 awards and medals from the competition, according to Dagupan City Information Office – 38 gold medals, 59 silver, and 85 bronze and 44 semifinalist medals, eight grand finalist medals, one scholarship, 29 division winner plaques, and one extraordinary national director plaque.
