The Pasig City government and stakeholders of the local education sector gathered at Nagpayong High School on Wednesday, Aug. 3 to kick-off the National Brigada Eskwela program in preparation for the resumption of face-to-face classes in public schools on Aug. 22.

The program was spearheaded by Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto and Councilor Corazon "Corie" Raymundo.
School administrators, teachers, parents, students, volunteers, and representatives of the local government discussed ways to collaborate to ensure the safe and orderly return to onsite learning.
Sotto assured all stakeholders that the local government fully supports all their projects and programs.
He said the local government has allotted around P80 million to support the back-to-school initiative.
The budget will be used for repairs and maintenance of buildings, classrooms, and other facilities.
"Halos lahat ng mga request ng ating mga paaralan through our principals, Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs), magagawa po natin sa susunod na isa o dalawang quarter ng school year na ito. Mula July hanggang sa katapusan ng taon (We will be able to fulfill almost all of the requests of the schools through the principals, and the PTAs in the next two quarters of the schools year. From July to the end of the year)," said Sotto.
The budget also covers the continuation of the local government's existing student-support programs.
Sotto highlighted the "Malusog na Batang Pasigueño" program that provides students with nutritional food packs and vitamins to keep them healthy as they study.
It is the local government's biggest program for students, the mayor said.
"Ang importante, nandito po tayong lahat ngayon, nagtutulungan, at nagaambag para maging mas maganda ang darating na school year natin (What matters is we are all here, cooperating, and doing our part to make this coming school year more productive)," Sotto added.
The Department of Education (DepEd) launched the "Brigada Eskwela" program for the school year 2022 to 2023 on Aug. 1.
The program will be held from Aug. 1 to Aug. 26, as per DepEd Memorandum No. 34, Series of 2022.
DepEd conducted pilot face-to-face class simulations in select cities and schools in December 2021.
Pasig Elementary School was one of the 28 schools in Metro Manila chosen for the pilot tests.
Pre-prepared
The schools in Pasig City have gradually conducted limited face-to-face classes beginning May 2022.
Pasig City Schools Division Superintendent Evalou Agustin had previously stated their readiness for the face-to-face classes this coming school year.
In a speech during the inauguration of the new Jovito R. Salonga Building in Pasig Elementary on June 22, Agustin called on the local government to help them prepare adequate classrooms and facilities to accommodate the volume of students.
During the peak of the pandemic, the local government enacted support programs for students during the quarantine and lockdown periods.
Education staff were deployed to barangays to conduct routine inspections to aid remote learners.
Starting April 14, 2020, every public elementary school student started to receive four food coupons worth P100 per coupon.
According to the National Nutrition Council (NNC), the coupons were exchanged for fresh food from the Pasig City Mega Market, the Mobile Palengke, and select Talipapas.
Around 130,000 school children benefited from this program, according to the NNC.
The local government continues to create programs that will provide computer tablets to public school students and teachers in the city.
During the turnover ceremony in October 2020, 3,500 students from the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Pasig (PLP) received tablets, while 70 laptops were given to teaching and non-teaching personnel.
The Pasig City Scholarship Program (PCSP) remains to give free tuition opportunities for eligible students to complete their tertiary education.
"Mula 12,000 scholars nung 2019, nasa 20,000 na ang Pasig City Scholars natin para sa taong 2022 (From 12,000 scholars in 2019, we now have 20,000 scholars for 2022)," Sotto said in a social media post on Dec. 21, 2021.
He added that he is aiming for 30,000 scholars per year until 2025.
