OVP permanent residence will result in big gov't savings, says VP spox
Providing an official residence for vice presidents will save the government rental costs in the long run, Vice President Sara Duterte’s spokesman said on Thursday, Aug. 4.

Lawyer Reynold Munsayac argued that it is more practical for the Office of the Vice President (OVP) to have a permanent residence rather than renting venues.
He said this as critics hit Vice President Sara Duterte’s plan to make finding an official and permanent residence a priority for her office because of the cost.
“Pero kapag inaral pong mabuti mas napapamahal ang gobyerno sa tuwing umuupa sila kasi wala pang permanenteng tanggapan or opisina ang (But if you study it closely, the government spends more every time they rent because there is no permanent residence or office for the) Office of the Vice President,” Munsayac explained.

Duterte’s spokesman talked to the media during a joint press briefing at the Bulwagan ng Karunungan, Department Education (DepEd) Complex in Pasig City.
The Vice President hold the position of Education chief in a concurrent capacity.
“So, in the long run, mas makakamura po talaga kung hindi na mag-iisip kung saan magrerenta iyong opisina ng ating (we will save more if there’s no need to think where to rent the office of our) vice president.”
He lamented that there seemed to be a misunderstanding as for the bill filed by Kusug Tausug Partylist Rep. Shernee Tan-Tambut that used the term “official residence.”

Munsayac clarified that the OVP’s official residence will be akin to Malacañang that will be used for official functions, and not a personal residence of the vice president.
Lawmakers can also start considering the budget allocation for the OVP’s official residence although the lawyer said that it will depend on the final location.
Earlier, he said that they are currently considering several locations.
The lack of official residence for the vice president has forced previous occupants of the office to use non-permanent sites.
Former vice president Leni Robredo held offices at the Quezon City Reception House, where Duterte is also currently holding temporary office, while her predecessor, former vice president Jejomar Binay held offices at the Philippine National Bank Building in Manila and Coconut Palace in Pasay City.
