Pastor-turned-solon abhors gambling, but vows to support PCSO; here's why

Manila 6th district Rep. Benny Abante has vowed to support the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) despite his long-time reservations against all forms of gambling.

Abante, a former pastor, made this revelation Tuesday, Aug. 30 during the presentation of the PCSO before the House Committee on Appropriations.

But why the veteran solon's supposed change of heart on gambling? It had a lot to do with the current chairman of PCSO, former Quirino lone district Rep. Junie Cua.

"I think of there's any colleague of mine in this chamber that would know me more, that would be Congressman Cua. He knows my stand on gambling and I've always been against gambling whether it be legal or illegal," Abante said to start his interpellation.

"I have fought this in the 13th Congress, in the 14th Congress, and I'm still fighting it today. Because even if it helps the economy of the country, it is not morally good for our people, particularly the young people," he explained in a calm manner as Cua and other PCSO officials listened.

"But because Congressman Cua is now the chairman of the PCSO," Abante said, "I cannot do anything but support the PCSO."

Amid chuckles from those in attendance, Abante added of the former Quirino solon: "Because I know him to be a fair man and I know he will do some good things in the PCSO."

How else could Cua react to the Manila lawmaker's remarks?

"I'd like to thank my good friend Benny for finally changing his position with regard to gambling because of me. Maraming, maraming salamat (Thank you very much), Benny!" the former multi--term House member and governor said.

The PCSO is mandated to raise money and provide funds for health programs, medical assistance and services, and charities of national character.

It does so by carrying out charity sweepstakes, races, and lotteries.

Abante is a former House minority leader and deputy speaker.
