78-year-old stowaway dies after falling in open drainage in Cavite

GENERAL TRIAS CITY, CAVITE – A 78-year-old man who ran away from home died after falling in an open drainage in a subdivision in Brgy. Pasong Kawayan 2 on Saturday night, Aug. 27.

Investigator-on-case Staff Sergeant Ernesto Angue Jr. told the Manila Bulletin that the victim reportedly ran away from his child's house in an attempt to travel back to his hometown.

"Depressed na siya, gusto na niyang umuwi nang Nueva Ecija. Eh wala pang pamasahe, kaya naka-ilang attempt nang tumakas sa kanila, sa anak niya. Sa pamamagitan nang paglalakad, gusto niyang makauwi sa Nueva Ecija (He was depressed and wanted to go home to Nueva Ecija. They did not have money for fare yet and he attempted several times to run away from his child's home. He wanted to walk to Nueva Ecija)," Angue said.

While walking in an unlighted portion of the subdivision, the victim reportedly fell on an open drainage beside the river.

Residents reported the incident to barangay officials and the victim was taken to the City of General Trias Medicare Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

Angue said the police do not suspect any foul play behind the incident. The family of the victim also waived their right to an autopsy report.
