Magnitude 5.2 quake jolts Abra — Phivolcs

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has recorded a 5.2-magnitude earthquake in Abra province early Sunday morning, Aug. 28.

Phivolcs said the quake struck 12 kilometers (km) southwest of Pilar, Abra at around 2:27 a.m.

It was felt at Intensity V (strong) in the municipalities of Pilar, Bangued and Bucay in Abra province.

It was also felt at Intensity IV (moderately strong) in Banayoyo, Ilocos Sur and San Fernando City, La Union.

Phivolcs’ instruments also recorded the earthquake at Intensity V in Bangued, Abra and Vigan City, Ilocos Sur; Intensity III in Sinait, Ilocos Sur; Intensity II in Gonzaga, Cagayan, Laoag City and Pasuquin in Ilocos Norte; and Intensity I in Claveria and Peñablanca in Cagayan, Santiago City in Isabela, Tabuk in Kalinga, San Jose in Nueva Ecija, Urdaneta, Infanta and Sison in Pangasinan, and Madella in Quirino.

It said the tremor was an aftershock of the 7.0-magnitude earthquake that struck Tayum, Abra on July 27.

Phivolcs said the earthquake may have caused damage to houses, buildings, and other infrastructures.

It advised the public to stay vigilant as aftershocks may occur.
