Gilas U18 yields to Iran, finishes 6th in FIBA U18 Asian Championship

Gilas U18 ended its FIBA U18 Asian Championships campaign with a sixth place finish following an 89-72 loss against Iran Sunday, Aug. 28, at the Azadi Basketball Hall in Tehran, Iran.

Matyar Ahmadpour and Mohammad Amini both tallied 19 points apiece as the latter also flirted with a triple-double performance with 10 rebounds and nine assists.

The Iranians waxed hot late in the second period as Ahmadpour and Amini connived to mount a comfortable 13-point lead heading into the third quarter, 43-30.

Iran never looked back at that point and continued to torch the Filipinos with their continuous barrage and even led by as many as 20 points despite Mason Amos' efforts to pump life for Gilas.

Three other Iraninans in Sarem Jafari (16), Parsa Ezati Manesh (12), and Mohammadamin Khosravi (10) posted double-digits as Iran ended up at fifth place in the placings.

Amos led the Filipino dribblers anew with 22 points and five rebounds while Earl Jared Abadam scored 18 points along with five boards as well.

Gilas swept the group stage with a 3-0 record in Group C before losing two of their last three games.

After the tournament, Amos emerged as the third top performer and the second-ranked scorer, averaging 21.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 1.5 assists.

Meanwhile, Korea and Japan are playing their Finals showdown as of press time while China clinched third place after routing Lebanon, 85-68.
