DepEd defers PH hosting of 12th ASEAN Schools Games

Citing the surge in Covid-19 cases and the pandemic’s impact on the country’s economy, the Department of Education (DepEd) deferred the hosting of the 12th ASEAN Schools Games set for November this year.

The department made this announcement through DepEd Memorandum No. 71 series of 2022 signed by Undersecretary and Chief of Staff Epimaco Densing III on Aug. 19.

DepEd announced through DM No. 36, s.2022 the rescheduling of the Philippines' Hosting of the 12th ASEAN Schools Games and DM 42, s. 2022 titled Philippines' Participation and Selection of the Members of the Delegation to the 12th ASEAN Schools Games.

However, “based on the objective assessment of the current Covid-19 Pandemic situation, as well as its impact on the Philippine economy,” DepEd announced the deferment of the Philippines' hosting of this year's international school sports competition participated by the ASEAN School Sports Council (ASSC) member-countries.

Currently, DepEd noted that the “Philippines is experiencing another surge in Covid-19 cases with the detection of a significant number of Omicron BA.5 subvariant” by the Department of Health (DOH).

“Moreover, the impact of the Covid- 19 pandemic on the country's economy has affected the capability to host the international school sports event,” DepEd added.

Following this announcement, DepEd said that the National Executive Committee (NEC) and the different technical working committees constituted for the hosting of the 12th ASEAN Schools Games (ASG) were also retracted.

“Further, all scheduled activities leading to the 12th ASG are suspended,” DepEd said.

Moreover, DepEd noted that all related issuances inconsistent with this latest memorandum are “repealed, rescinded, and modified” accordingly.
