Filipino pole vaulter EJ Obiena settled for a bronze medal against the same topnotch field in the 2022 Athletissima in Lausanne, Switzerland early Friday morning, Aug. 26.

Obiena, the No. 3 pole vaulter in the world, registered 5.80 meters in his second attempt to clinch a podium finish against familiar faces as top-ranked Mondo Duplantis of Sweden ruled the contest after clearing 6.10m in his third attempt en route to a new meet record.
Duplantis, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics gold medalist, easily overcame the 5.90 mark on his first attempt and opted to raise the bar to 6.10m.
American Christopher Nilsen followed suit in second place and got past the 5.80m clearance but only needed one attempt.
Both Nilsen and Obiena tried to clear 5.90m but failed after three tries each.
Sondre Guttormsen of Norway placed fourth despite surpassing 5.80m due to countback.
Up next for the Filipino top pole vaulter would be the True Athletics Classics in Leverkusen, Germany on Sunday, Aug. 28 there.
Obiena is fresh from a gold medal finish in the Stabhochsprung Meeting in Jockgrim, Germany last Aug. 23, where he ousted the likes of Nilsen and Kurist Marschall of Australia and hometown bet Bo Kanda Luta Baehre.
