ILOILO CITY – Vice President and Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Sara Duterte told students in the island-province of Gumaras, Thursday, Aug. 25, to finish their education before marrying.

“Huwag kayo mag asawa ng maaga. Huwag kayo magka-anak (Don’t marry early. Don’t have children early),” Duterte told selected students who were in the audience during her visit to Jordan, the provincial capital.
Duterte went down the stage to go around and ask students what are the consequences of having families early on, especially those who come from families who are not financially stable.
“Mag-iikot lang ang kahirapan sa pamilya (The cycle of poverty will just continue),” Duterte warned.
The Vice President also reminded students to have the determination and hard work in finishing their education. She also told parents to be there for their children.
Prior to Duterte’s arrival, the Office of the Vice President gave bags and other school supplies to 1,500 students from five towns of the province – Buenavista, Jordan, Nueva Valencia, San Lorenzo, and Sibunag.
It was Duterte’s first official visit to Guimaras as vice president.
