LEGAZPI CITY, Albay – A 32-year-old public school teacher died rescuing his colleague swept away by flood while crossing a spillway in Barangay San Vicente, Bato, Camarines Sur Tuesday, Aug. 23.
Gremil Naz of the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD)-Bicol identified the victim as Romeo Sison Jr., 32, a public school teacher of San Roque High School and a resident of San Antonio Poblacion, Nabua, Camarines Sur.
Police said that Sison’s co-teacher at San Roque High School, Gemmo Intia, 36, a resident of Barangay Divina Pastora, Bato, was carried away by knee-deep floodwater while crossing the the spillway onboard a bicycle at about 5:45 p.m.
Sison attempted to rescue Intia but he was swept away by strong current and disappeared in the floodwater. Intia sustained injuries.
The Bato Municipal Police Station (MPS), Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), and Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) conducted rescue operations and around 7:45 p.m. Tuesday, Sison was found and brought to the Medical Mission Group Hospital in Nabua where he was pronounced dead.
