Despite the onslaught of tropical storm "Florita" on Tuesday, August 23, the Pasig City local government, the Department of Health (DOH), and officials of Rizal High School (RHS), launched the national government's "PinasLakas" vaccination initiative following the resumption of classes for school year 2022-2023 and the detection of more transmissible Covid-19 Omicron subvariants in the country.

According to the DOH, the school, also considered as the second largest secondary school in the world, and identified as a high-yield area for Covid-19, has been identified as a strategic setup for the agency's settings-based approach in the national vaccination drive.
Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto, DOH Officer-in-Charge Secretary Dr. Maria Rosario Vergeire, Assistant Secretary Nestor Santiago, Department of Education (DepEd) Chief of Staff Usec. Epimaco V. Densing III, and Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) City Director Visitacion Martinez led the program's launch. Also present were Metro Manila Center for Health Development Regional Director Gloria Balboa, Dr. Annabelle R. Ombina, Medical Officer IV of the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Covid-19 Committee, and Pasig City Schools Division Superintendent (SDS) Dr. Ma. Evalou Agustin.

Sotto expressed his gratitude to both the DOH and DepEd for their relentless efforts in ensuring the safety of the students in the city.
"Mula nung umpisa ay naramdaman po ng Pasig, naramdaman po ng lokal na pamahalaan, at ng mga mamamayang Pasigueño, ang tulong at suporta mula sa nasyonal na pamahalaan. Yung mga kasama po natin ngayon ay kasama sa mga nagtrabaho para maging smooth at mabilis ang rollout ng vaccination sa ating lungsod (From the start, the city of Pasig, the local government, and all Pasigueños, felt the help and support coming from the national government. The people here with us today are those who have worked to make the vaccination rollout in our city smooth and fast)," Sotto said.
He lauded the officials and employees of all schools in Pasig for the safe and peaceful resumption of classes on Aug. 22. He also underscored the importance of getting vaccinated against the virus.
"Isa sa mga pinakaimportanteng component ng pag back-to-school natin ay ang ating pagbabakuna, kaya ito ay isang prayoridad ng lokal na pamahalaan, prayoridad din ito ng mga kasama natin sa nasyonal na pamahalaan (One of the most important components in our return to school is the vaccination, which is one of the priorities of the local government and the national government)," the mayor said.
He added that the city government now aims to shift the vaccination program of the city from its mega vaccination sites to its schools and health centers, making it easier for the community to get themselves inoculated against Covid-19.
Vergeire thanked the city government for its support in the return to school efforts of RHS and in ensuring that students, members of the faculty, and the constituents of Pasig, are protected against the severe and critical symptoms of Covid-19.
“The Department of Education, Rizal High School, and the Pasig City LGU have manifested how we can send our children back to schools through our commitment and persistent efforts of vaccinating and boosting against Covid-19, and we are optimistic that we can effect this all over the country since it is possible and doable,” Vergeire said.
As of Friday, Aug. 19, the school logged a total of 12,300 enrollees in the junior and senior high school levels of the RHS main campus, according to Richard Santos, the principal of RHS.
"Fifty percent po muna 'yung narereport sa amin weekly. Hinati namin 'yung 12,300 into sets A and B. Sa unang linggo, 'yung 6,150 at sa susunod na linggo, ang papasok naman 'yung 6,150 sa set B (We divided the 12,300 enrollees into sets A and B with 50 percent reporting to school weekly. In the first week, the 6,150 students in set A will be on-site. Then the other 6,150 in set B will be for the following week)," he said in an interview with DZBB.
Santos said the RHS is not implementing a double shifting system. It will continue with the 50-50 online and on-site alternate modality from Aug. 22 to Oct. 31.
The Pasig City Schools Division Office (SDO) said that nine out of 44 public elementary and high schools in the city will implement full face-to-face classes this week.
These are the Francisco Legaspi Memorial School, Ugong National High School, Maybunga Elementary School, Sto. Niño Elementary School, Pinagbuhatan High School, Pasig City Science High School, Dela Paz High School, Pinagbuhatan Elementary School, and San Miguel Elementary School.
The other 35 schools will be implementing blended learning with their respective schedules for on-site and virtual sessions.
