'Florita' leaves PH but Signal No. 1 still up over parts of northern Luzon

Tropical cyclone wind signal number 1 remained hoisted over parts of northern Luzon even after severe tropical storm Florita (international name: Ma-on) left the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) Wednesday morning, Aug. 24.

In its 5 a.m. bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Florita was last spotted 335 kilometers west of Calayan, Cagayan, or outside the PAR.

However, Signal No. 1 was still up in Batanes, Babuyan Islands, western portion of mainland Cagayan, Apayao, Abra, western portion of Kalinga, western portion of Mountain Province, northern and western portions of Benguet, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, and La Union.

PAGASA said areas under Signal No. 1 may still experience strong winds due to storm Florita.

It added that moderate to heavy rains may prevail over La Union, Pangasinan, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Abra, and Benguet, while light to moderate with at times heavy rains may persist in Apayao, Kalinga, Ifugao, and Mountain Province.

“Rainfall caused by Florita is forecast to gradually weaken throughout the day,” PAGASA said.

Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon or “habagat” may continue to bring rains over the western sections of Central and Southern Luzon in the next 24 hours.

“Gusts reaching strong breeze to gale-force strength may still be experienced, especially in the coastal and mountainous areas, over Mimaropa (Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan), Metro Manila, Cavite, Quezon, Bulacan, Pampanga, Pangasinan, Aurora, and localities of Cordillera Administrative Region and Cagayan Valley that are not under any wind signal,” PAGASA said.
