3,440 persons affected by 'Florita' in Cordillera

BAGUIO CITY – Severe tropical storm “Florita” affected 3,440 individuals from 1,051 families in five provinces in the Cordillera region.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD)-Cordillera said as of 6 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24, Abra was the most affected by Florita with 650 families or 2,041 individuals from eight barangays.

Apayao, which was in the path of Florita, 352 families or 1,217 individuals from 12 barangays were affected.

In Mountain Province, 39 families or 147 individuals from three barangays were evacuated from their homes due to the threat of landslides caused by heavy rains.

Nine families or 32 individuals from nine barangays in Benguet were also affected.

One family was affected in Kalinga.

Enrique Gascon Jr., assistant regional director for administration of DSWD-Cordillera, said these people chose to leave their homes because of an impending danger in their area that may be provoked by the rain from the tropical cyclone.

They were either sheltered by a designated evacuation area or by their relatives.

Gascon said 49,071 family food packs are now scattered in the warehouses of every province in the region and the monitoring of those affected by Florita and the distribution of relief goods in evacuation centers continues.
