Chinese Taipei survives Australia for first win in AVC Cup

Chinese Taipei survived the gritty challenge of Australia, 23-25, 25-22, 25-27, 25-21, 15-6, to notch its first win in the 2022 Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Cup for Women at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City Tuesday, Aug. 23.

The Taiwanese rose from a 2-1 deficit and turned back the Australians with variety of attacks to improve their win-loss tally to 1-1 following a loss to Japan Monday, Aug. 22.

Kan Ko-Hui lifted Chinese Taipei with 18 points including 17 on attacks, while Chang Li-Wen and Chen Tzu-Ya added 15 and 12 points, respectively.

The victory overshadowed the efforts of Caitlin Tipping for Australia, who exploded for 28 points on 23 kills and five blocks.

Inspired by their fourth-set triumph, Chinese Taipei cruised to 4-0 and 7-1 leads in the deciding fifth set to direct the tempo en route to the match win.

Overall, the Taiwanese endured Australia’s rock-solid net defense of 18 blocks by firing 66 kills.

They also leaned on Australia’s error-prone plays by converting 38 points on errors.

Meanwhile, the Philippines takes on Iran Wednesday, Aug. 24.

They battle powerhouse China at presstime with hopes of bouncing back from a straight-set loss to Vietnam Sunday, Aug. 21.
