2022 MTV VMAs: All the records that could be broken


The 2022 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) will be held on Aug. 28 at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

Ahead of the awards shows, VegasInsider.com collected all of the records that could be potentially broken at this year’s ceremony.

VIDEO OF THE YEAR

According to Vegas Insider, Taylor Swift could become the first and only artist ever to win a third Video of the Year trophy (she is currently in a tie for the most wins, two, with Beyoncé, Rihanna and Eminem). She previously won VOTY for “Bad Blood” (2015) and “You Need To Calm Down” (2019).

She could also become the first artist ever to win a Video of the Year for a video that she directed by herself. “You Need To Calm Down” (2019) was co-directed by Swift, and she also won the Best Director VMA category with “The Man” (2020) music video.

Lil Nas X could become the first artist ever to win Video of the Year two years in a row (he won last year for “Montero (Call Me By Your Name),” and he is nominated this year for “Industry Baby” feat. Jack Harlow.

BEST HIP HOP VIDEO

Nicki Minaj could break her tie with Drake (two wins) and become the most awarded artist in the Hip Hop category with three wins (she had previously won for “Anaconda” in 2015 and “Chun-Li” in 2018 and she is nominated this year for “Do We Have a Problem” feat. Lil Baby)

Eminem could join Nicki Minaj and Drake as the most awarded artist in the category with two wins (He had previously won for “Not Afraid” in 2010 and he is nominated this year for “From the D 2 the LDC” with Snoop Dog)

BEST R&B VIDEO

Alicia Keys could break her tie with Beyoncé, En Vogue and Destiny’s Child, and become the artist with the most wins with three (She had previously won for “Karma” and “If I Ain’t Got You” , and she is nominated this year for “City Of Gods.”

The Weeknd could join Alicia Keys, Beyoncé, En Vogue and Destiny’s Child as the artist with the most wins in this category - two (He previously won for “Blinding Lights” and he is nominated this year for “Out Of Time”).

Normani could join Alicia Keys, Beyoncé, En Vogue and Destiny’s Child as the artist with the most wins in this category - two (She previously won for “Waves” and she is nominated this year for “Wild Side” feat. Cardi B).

BEST K-POP VIDEO

BTS could add to their record of most wins in the K-Pop category (four). The award was launched in 2019, and they have won three times, every year since its inception - “Boy With Luv” (2019), “On” (2020) and “Butter” (2021). They are nominated this year for “Yet To Come.”

Itzy (“Loco”), Lisa (“LaLisa”) or Twice (“The Feels”) could become the first female K-Pop artist to win in this category

BEST LONG-FORM VIDEO

Madonna could add to her record as the second most awarded VMA winner of all times, if she wins for “Madame X”, which would put her total wins at 21. She has won 20 VMAs and only Beyoncé has won more - 29.

Madonna already made a new record with the nominations announcement, becoming the first artist ever to be nominated in five decades - she was first nominated in 1984 for Best New Artist with “Borderline,” and has amassed 69 nominations since.
