China, Thailand post contrasting wins in AVC Cup

China and Thailand posted contrasting victories Monday, Aug. 22, in the 2022 Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Cup for Women at the Philsports Complex in Pasig City.

The Chinese squandered a two-set advantage before surviving a resilient Vietnam, 25-12, 25-6, 29-31, 21-25, 15-12, while the Thais swept Australia, 25-9, 27-25, 25-13.

It was China’s second straight triumph after sweeping Korea Sunday, Aug. 21, while Thailand evened its record to 1-1 following a loss to Japan.

Zhou Yetong paced the Chinese with 27 points built on 23 kills and four blocks, while Zhuang Yushan pumped in 21 points, all from attacks.

Wu Mengjie and Hu Mingyuan also contributed 17 and 16 points.

Meanwhile, the Thais, who only needed 78 minutes in disposing of their Australian foes, banked on Pimpichaya Kokram with 16 points on 14 attacks and two aces while getting help from Watchareeya Nuanjam and Chatchu-on Moksri, who fired nine points each.

Vietnam slipped to 1-1 while Australia absorbed its first loss.
