Phivolcs records nearly 2,300 aftershocks following the July 27 northwestern Luzon quake

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has so far recorded 2,286 aftershocks following the magnitude 7.0 earthquake that struck Tayum, Abra on July 27.

As of 9 a.m., Tuesday, August 2, Phivolcs had detected 2,286 aftershocks, with magnitudes ranging from 1.4 to 5.1.

Of the recorded earthquakes, 755 earthquakes have been plotted by three or more stations.

Only 58 of the recorded tremors were felt, Phivolcs said.

The 7.0-magnitude earthquake that struck northwestern Luzon on July 27 is the strongest inland quake since the 6.6-magnitude Masbate quake in August 2020, said Science and Technology OIC Secretary Renato Solidum Jr.

Solidum, in a press conference on July 27, had advised the public to remain vigilant, as aftershocks may occur in the next few days or weeks.

“But with time, the number decreases. Sometimes intermittently, sometimes the magnitude is higher than the previous one, that’s normal. But the tendency is, it would decrease with time,” he said.
